From Proto-Turkic *bakana (pole, pillar, column), or an early borrowing from a Mongolic source (compare Mongolian багана (bagana, pole, column)).

Cognate with Kazakh бағана (bağana, pillar, column), Karachay-Balkar багъана (bağana, pillar, column), Kumyk багъана (bağana), Tuvan багана (bagana, pillar, column), Yakut баҕана (bağana, pillar, column), etc.
