From Proto-Turkic *bat- (to sink).[1]

Cognate with Turkish batmak (to sink, set), Yakut батылын (batılın, to sink), Chuvash пут (put, to sink, drown).

батыу (batıw) (intransitive)

  1. to sink, submerge
    Ағас һыуға батмай.
    Ağas hıwğa batmay.
    Wood does not sink in water.
  2. to drown
  3. get bogged down
  4. to set, go below the horizon (of heavely bodies)
    Synonym: байыу (bayıw) (the Sun)
