From Proto-Mansi *pūt, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *pata.[1] Possibly from the extinct Indo-European language close to the Balto-Slavic family, cf. Lithuanian púodas (pot, saucepan).[2] Cognates Proto-Finnic *pata, Hungarian fazék.
