Inherited from Proto-Turkic *bitig (inscription), action noun of *biti- (to write) (compare Old Turkic 𐰋𐰃𐱅𐰃 (biti-, to write, inscribe)), presumably borrowed from Middle Chinese (MC pit, “writing brush”).[1]
