Etymology edit

Adapted from Russian великому́ченик (velikomúčenik), itself a calque of Ancient Greek μεγαλομάρτυς (megalomártus).

The alternative form великому́ченик (velikomúčenik) may have been the original Bulgarian form, in which case this alternative form was the one borrowed from Russian and was then adapted to the current form.
