From га́лда́ (gáldá), from Proto-Slavic *galъda, cognate with Polish gałda (noise, uproar). Ultimately from Proto-Slavic *galъ (noise), cognate with Ukrainian га́лас (hálas), Belarusian га́лас (hálas) and Polish gałuszyć (to rumble).
