Inherited from Proto-Slavic *žerbьcь, from *žerbę, from Proto-Indo-European *gʷrebʰ-. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic жрѣбѧ (žrěbę), Bulgarian жребе́ц (žrebéc), Polish źrebiec (colt). Compare Ancient Greek βρέφος (bréphos, baby, foetus).
