Bashkir edit

Etymology edit

From Proto-Turkic *erke, if this isn't a re-borrowing of *erk from Mongolic. See ирек (irek), Mongolian эрх (erx).

The root is not attested in pre-13th century Turkic, but its wide geographical distribution and wider semantical range make native origin more likely.

Cognate with Kazakh ерке (erke, naughty, spoiled (child)), Uzbek erka (spoiled (child)).

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): [irˈkæ]
  • Hyphenation: ир‧кә
