Etymology edit

From Proto-Mordvinic *lavčə, possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *lawča (tender, soft, loose). Potential cognates include Finnish lauha (mild, temperate), Estonian lahva.

Alternatively, related to Finnish laiha (thin, lean, weak) (see there for more).
