Etymology edit
From Proto-Mordvinic *lavčə, possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *lawča (“tender, soft, loose”). Potential cognates include Finnish lauha (“mild, temperate”), Estonian lahva.
Alternatively, related to Finnish laiha (“thin, lean, weak”) (see there for more).
