Etymology edit

Hypercorrect spelling of ла́пат (lápat) with word-final consonant voicing. Borrowed from Greek λάπατο (lápato, sorrel), from Ancient Greek λάπαθον (lápathon). Further etymology uncertain.

Cognate with Albanian lëpjetë, Portuguese labaça and Italian lapazio, among others.

  1. any of the species (Rumex) of edible dock, in particular patience dock (Rumex patientia). Derived terms sometimes refer to different plant genera which resemble dock.
