Borrowed from Polish pokuta, from Old Czech pokuta, from Proto-Slavic *роkǫta. Compare Czech pokuta, Slovene pokuta, Belarusian паку́та (pakúta). Related to Lithuanian pakantà, Lithuanian ke̦͂sti, Polish kucić, Czech kutiti.
