Etymology

edit

Uncertain. Per Vasmer, from hypothetical Proto-Slavic *sǫlěja, from *sǫ + liti. However, compare Middle Polish sulnica (flask, bottle), dialectal Polish sulak (a small pot), Slovene sulj (tub), dialectal Czech šulek (box) and Lithuanian šùlė (container, vessel), which posit a different origin, if they are related.
