From терни́ (terný) +‎ -и́стий (-ýstyj). Compare Russian терни́стый (ternístyj), Belarusian цярні́сты (cjarnísty), Polish ciernisty. The root is inherited from Proto-Slavic *tьrnъ (thorn, blackthorn).
