From Proto-Turkic *teŋri. Cognate with Kyrgyz теңир (teŋir), Kumyk тенгири (teñiri), Tatar тәңрe (täñre), Bashkir тәңре (təñre, “god, sky”), Turkish tanrı, etc.

The standard spelling is теҥери but other spellings are also used and pronunciation varies, often the final И can cease to exist. Alternative terms are теҥере (teŋere), теҥре (teŋre), etc.
