From Proto-Turkic *toŋ- (to freeze, congeal).[1]

Cognate with Kazakh тоңу (toñu), Kyrgyz тоңуу (toŋuu), Southern Altai тоҥор (toŋor), Shor тоң-, Uzbek to'ngmoq, Uyghur توڭماق (tongmaq), Azerbaijani donmaq, Turkish donmak, Khakas тоорға (toorğa), Tuvan доңар (doñar), Yakut тоҥ (toñ, to freeze).

  1. to freeze, congeal, to become solid due to low temperature
    Был шишмә ҡышын да туңмай.
    Bıl şişmə qışın da tuñmay.
    This spring does not freeze in the winter.
