чопорный
Russian
editEtymology
editFrom an unattested Old East Slavic word + -ный (-nyj); compare Russian Church Slavic чепрь (čeprĭ, “delight, pleasure”). Also cognate with чепори́ться (čeporítʹsja, “to be important”) (also чепури́ться (čepurítʹsja), чепу́риться (čepúritʹsja)), and similarly with Ukrainian чепури́ти (čepurýty, “to dress up, to decorate”) (also чепу́рити (čepúryty)), чепури́тися (čepurýtysja, “to be important”) (also чепу́ритися (čepúrytysja)), Belarusian чепуры́цца (čjepurýcca, “to be important”), Slovene čepériti se (“to bristle one's feathers, to be important”) (tonal orthography), Greek τσοπορός (tsoporós, “cutesy”) (a borrowing from Slavic).
