Etymology

edit

From Old Turkic ïrq[1] ("prediction", "fate", "guessing"), from Proto-Turkic *ir-

A verbal-noun derivative with the affix -(a)m, homogeneous with words ырық and ырыс. Its basic meanings include "omen", "prediction", fate, "predestination", happiness, and prosperity.

V. Thomsen, B. Y. Vladimirtsov, W. Bang, and A. von Gaben identified the commonality of verb *ır- > ырым (yrym) and ырық (yryq) with yar- meaning "to split", ırıl- meaning "to form cracks", and in ırq and ırım (> yrym) meaning ancient divination accessories found on burnt ram shoulder blades. [2]
