Inherited from Old East Slavic ꙗчьмꙑ (jačĭmy), from Proto-Slavic *(j)ęčьmy. Cognates include Ancient Greek ἀκοστή (akostḗ, barley), Latin acus (needle) and Old English ahar (corn-ear).
