Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *jondəl, possibly compounded from the hypothetical root *jomə, inherited from Proto-Finno-Permic [Finno-Volgaic] *juma (god), and *tol (fire). Alternatively, but less likely, the first component comes from *jon (side).
