Etymology edit

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kańak (kaymak), which is possibly a suffix-derived noun from an unattested verbal stem *qaj̃- with the affix -maq.

The alternative form qayaq ~ qaj̃aq ~ qanaq, which is attested in Old Turkic and in some of the Siberian Turkic languages, appears to have derived from the same verb stem with the different affix -aq.

Cognate with Kazakh қаймақ (qaimaq, cream), Kyrgyz каймак (kaymak), Southern Altai каймак (kaymak), Karachay-Balkar къаймакъ (qaymaq), Uzbek qaymoq, Uyghur قايماق (qaymaq), Azerbaijani qaymaq, Turkish kaymak (creamy dairy product), Northern Altai каймак (kaymak), etc.
