From խաչատուր (xačʿatur, given by the cross), from խաչ (xačʿ, cross) + -ա- (-a-) + տամ (tam, to give).[1] Typologically compare Greek Σταύρος (Stávros), from σταυρός (stavrós, cross). In use since the 11th century.
