An Iranian borrowing. Compare Manichaean Parthian ʾxšd (*axšad, *axšaẟ, pity, mercy), Manichaean Middle Persian ʾxšʾd (*axšād, troubled, distressed; distress). Related to ապաշխարեմ (apašxarem).
