From Proto-Indo-European *ǵoi-ǵar-n-, reduplication of *ǵār- ‎(voice, exclamation). Cognate with Ossetian зар ‎(zar, song), Ancient Greek γῆρυς ‎(gêrus, voice), Latin garrio ‎(to chatter), Old English cearu (English care).
