From Proto-Indo-European *ǵoy-ǵar-n-, reduplication of *ǵār-(voice, exclamation). Cognate with Ossetian зар(zar, song), Ancient Greek γῆρυς(gêrus, voice), Latin garrio(to chatter), Old English cearu (English care).
