Old Armenian edit
Etymology edit
The origin is uncertain. Perhaps created by the Hellenizing School from ներ (ner, “in”) and փողոց (pʻołocʻ, “street”), as a calque of Ancient Greek ἐγκώμιον (enkṓmion, “laudatory ode, praise”), from ἐν (en, “in”) and κῶμος (kômos, “festival, procession in the streets”). For the unusual spelling instead of *ներփող (*nerpʻoł) see բդեդ (bded).
