From Old Armenian շատ (šat), from an Iranian source, from Proto-Iranian *čyáHtiš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *čyáHtiš, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷyéh₁-ti-s ~ *kʷih₁-téy-s, from *kʷyeh₁- (to rest) +‎ *-tis;[1] compare Persian شاد (šâd, glad, happy), French quiétude, and, for an analogous semantic development from the same root, English quite. Doublet of հանգչել (hangčʻel).
