Etymology

Considering the word stress, probably cognate to rather than borrowed from Russian больни́ца (bolʹníca). Possibly instead borrowed from Carpathian Rusyn бо́лниця (bólnycja) or obsolete Ukrainian бо́льниця (bólʹnycja). By surface analysis, Proto-Slavic *bolь +‎ ־ניצע (-nitse).
