  1. (intransitive) To start, to begin.
    • 11th century, Rashi, “Devarim 11:19”, in Commentary on the Torah:
      כשהתינוק מתחיל לדבר אביו מסיח עמו בלשון הקדש ומלמדו תורה
      When the infant begins to speak, his father should speak to him in Lashon Hakodesh and teach him Torah.
  2. (transitive) To start, to begin.
