זִעְזֵעַ (zi'zéa') (pi'el construction, passive counterpart זועזע / זֻעְזַע)

  1. to shake violently; to agitate, shock or horrify; to destabilize
    • Tanach, Habakkuk 2:7, with translation of the Jewish Publication Society:
      הֲלוֹא פֶתַע יָקוּמוּ נֹשְׁכֶיךָ, וְיִקְצוּ מְזַעְזְעֶיךָ; וְהָיִיתָ לִמְשִׁסּוֹת לָמוֹ?
      haló féta' yaqumú nošəchécha, vəyiqtzú məza'zə'écha; vəhayíta liməšissót lamó?
      Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall exact interest of thee,
      And awake that shall violently shake thee,
      And thou shalt be for booties unto them?
