From Middle High German tunkel, from Old High German tunkal, tuncal (“dark”), from Proto-West Germanic *dunkal, from Proto-Germanic *dunkalaz (“dark”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰengʷ- (“to smoke, fume”). Compare to German dunkel.
