Etymology

edit

Most likely cognate with German Straße f. If so, inherited from Middle High German strāze, from Old High German strāza, from Proto-West Germanic *strātu, from Latin strata.

The unexpected masculine gender may be due to conflation with other masculine nouns also descending from a Middle High German form ending in -e, such as האָז m (hoz), from Middle High German hase.
