Etymology 1 edit
A Cairene distortion of مستيكة (mastīka) valid for other Egyptian Arabic dialects now displaced by Cairene, colloquial byform of Arabic Standard مُصْطَكَى (muṣṭakā, “mastic”), then extended by French élastique and its descendant Ottoman Turkish الاستیق (elastik, elastık), لاستیق (lastik, lastık, “caoutchouc, rubber”).
