Elative of وَفِير (wafīr, “abundant”) and وَافِر (wāfir, “abundant, profuse”) and وَفْر (wafr, “abundant, general”). Unusually, declined as if a color or defect adjective (according to Steingass and Almaany; see below). Also compare وَفَّرَ (waffara, “to save, to economize”).
