Etymology 1 edit
Inherited from Common Turkic *apa (“ancestor”).Kashgari's attempt at tying it with Arabic أَب (ʔab) and Tibetan པ་ཕ (pa pha) are folk etymology based on similar phonology. The meaning "bear" is a result of taboo speech.
Noun edit
اَبا (apā)
Etymology 2 edit
Clauson and Tekin suggest a native Turkic origin, reconstructable to Common Turkic *ōpa.[1] On the other hand, Räsänen, Eren and Nişanyan consider it a borrowing from Middle Mongol ᠣᠪᠤᠭᠠ (obug-a, “pile, mass; boundary”)[2] from ᠣᠪᠤᠶᠢᠬᠤ (obuyiqu, “to pile up”).[3][4][5]
