Etymology

edit

Inherited from Prakrit 𑀉𑀩𑁆𑀪 (ubbha), from Sanskrit ऊर्ध्व (ūrdhvá), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *r̥Hdʰwás (high, upright), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃r̥dʰ-wó-s (high, upright).

The sense 'north' comes from the fact that the 'land up-river' is in the north.
