From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾplng /⁠abrang⁠/, splendour), from Proto-Iranian *abi-ra(n)ǰ- (to color, dye), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)reg-. Cognate with Ancient Greek ῥέζω (rhézō, I dye, paint) and Persian رنگ (rang) itself; also an exact doublet of اورنگ (abranjan, bracelet).
