Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ütüg (flatiron), probably from *üt- (to burn, singe); cognate with Azerbaijani ütü, Bashkir үтек (ütek), Kazakh үтік (ütık), Kyrgyz үтүк (ütük), Tatar үтүк (ütük), Turkmen ütük and the borrowed Russian утюг (utjug).
