From Middle Persian [script needed] (ywtn’ /⁠jūdan⁠/), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵyewh₁-. Cognate with English chew, Pashto ژول (žovạl, to gnaw), Baluchi جایگ (jáyag), Northern Kurdish cûtin.
