From Middle Persian dwhtn' (dōxtan, to sew). Cognate with Baluchi دوچگ (dócag), Gilaki دوتن (dutən) (present stem دوج (duj)), and Mazanderani بدوتن (baduten).

From Middle Persian dwhtn' (dōxtan, to milk), from Old Persian *dáuxšatiy, ultimately from Proto-Iranian *dáwxšati (to milk). Whence also دوشیدن (dušidan). Cognate with Baluchi دوشگ (dóšag), Northern Kurdish doşîn.
