editدو (do) + شنبه (šanbe), literally “two (days after) Saturday”. From Manichaean Middle Persian 𐫅𐫇𐫢𐫖𐫁𐫎 (dwšmbṯ /dōšambat/, “Monday”). The name of the city derives from the large bazaar that occurred on Mondays in the area.
