Originally رَأْيَة(raʾya), an instance noun derived from رَأْي(raʾy, sight, perception), verbal noun of رَأَى(raʾā, to see), but "the Arabs prefer omitting [the hamza] ... and some say it has not been heard with ء(ʾ, hamza)." (Lane)
