Etymology

edit

Borrowed from Arabic رَقَابَة (raqāba, controlling, supervision).

Note that Arabic رَقِيب (raqīb, watchman, keeper) became Persian رقیب (raqib, rival, competitor), traditionally thought to be because the beloved woman's watchman or guardian is the rival of the lover. The related word رقابت (reqâbat) has changed meaning accordingly.
