From Arabic عَلَى ٱلرِّيقِ (ʕala r-rīqi, “on an empty stomach”). Equivalent to على (ʕla, “on”) + الريق (er-rīq, “the saliva”), literally “on the saliva”. Compare Maltese għar-riq and Egyptian Arabic عالرايق (ʕar-rāyeʔ).
