Etymology

From Middle Iranian ayyār; akin to Manichaean Middle Persian hyʾr (hayyār, “helper”). Partially borrowed from Arabic عَيَّار (ʕayyār, “vagabond”), from the root ع ي ر (ʕ-y-r) related with roaming and wandering.

عیار • ('ayyâr) (plural عیاران ('ayyârân))

1. a bandit from a group of outlaws in Sassanid Persia and early Islamic era until Mongol invasion who were praised for their deeds which was robbing from the rich and giving to the poor.
2. a vagabond, a tramp
