From Proto-Turkic *kamčï (whip), a derivation from *kam- (to beat, strike down). Cognate with Karakhanid قَمْجٖى (qamčï̄, whip), قَمّاقْ (qammāq, to beat), Turkmen gamçy (whip), Ottoman Turkish قامچی (kamçı).
