From Classical Syriac ܡܪܰܓܳܢ (margān, pearl-like), from ܡܰܪܓܳܢܺܝܬܳܐ (margānīṯā, pearl), from Ancient Greek μαργαρίτης (margarítēs, pearl), an Iranian borrowing. For the meaning development compare Arabic مَرْو (marw, odoriferous plants; Maerua crassifolia; pebble; flint; quartz).
