Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish مِلِّیَّت (milliyyet), itself coined in Ottoman Turkish from ملت (millet) +‎ ـیت (-iyyet) (both elements respectively borrowed from Arabic مِلَّة (milla) and ـِيَّة (-iyya)). By surface analysis, ملت (millát, nation) +‎ ـيت (-iyat).
