Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀳𑀺𑀲𑀻 (mahisī), from Sanskrit महिष (mahiṣa). Cognate with Marathi म्हैस (mhais), Nepali भैंसी (bha͠isī), Urdu بھینس, Gujarati ભેંસ (bhẽs).
