Etymology
editCompounded from يَا (yā, “O”) + اللّٰه (allāh, “God”). The colloquial sense derives from supplications of the sort “O God, let this and that happen!”, whence it was generalised to a particle or exclamation expressing a wish, encouragement, or command.
