Etymology

edit

(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) From Proto-Semitic *ʕakbar- (mouse) mingled with عُرْقُوب (ʕurqūb, hamstring, Achilles tendon) from *ʿarqūb- (hamstring, Achilles tendon) in specialization to the fauna of the Arabian desert where the jerboa is marked by its jumping muscles. Compare Classical Syriac ܥܽܘܩܒܪܳܐ (ʾuqbarā, mouse), Hebrew עַכְבָּר (ʾaḵbār, mouse).
