From Chagatai ییلكان (yelken), from Common Turkic *yelken, derived from Proto-Turkic *yẹl (wind). Cognates with Turkish yelken, Uzbek yelkan, Southern Altai јелгин (ǰelgin), Kumyk елкен (yelken).
